Our primary and junior classes are paired for Learning Buddies once or twice monthly. Having younger and older students spend time together creates a greater sense of school community among the students. It is very rewarding to see the natural nurturing side that shines through with our junior students during the Learning Buddy activities. They continually demonstrate a developing sense of empathy.
The primary students really enjoy working with the older students. They look up to them as role models as well as learn from them academically. A recent example between a Grade 6 and a Kindergarten class involved using an iPad app called Puppet Pals to make a story that included some basic story elements such as characters and setting, as well as a beginning, middle and end to the story. A few of them were shown to the students with great excitement.
Our teachers take turns co-ordinating these activities with the support of our Educational Assistants (E.A.’s) and Early Childhood Educators (E.C.E.’s). The teachers that are not supervising those particular periods are able to meet with their grade level colleagues for collaborative planning sessions. This time is quite valuable in helping teachers plan for school, classroom and individual student needs and goals.
