A big thank-you goes out to the parents, students and staff of Abraham Erb for contributing to the success of the Garage Sale. The intent of Room 16’s Grade 6’s was to raise money on behalf of 3 organizations that care for and train dogs. Those organizations are KW-Humane Society, Autism Dog Services (Waterloo) and Dog Guides (Kitchener). The students raised $1331.30 which will be divided equally among the 3 organizations.
This “service learning” project all started when Room 16 was reading the novel “A Dog’s Purpose” and later saw the movie of the same name. Many discussions and writing activities took place about dogs as well as research projects that seek to share information with other classes in the school. Several dogs also visited Room 16. Some were service dogs in training while others were family pets. This was a very positive experience for the students as well.
Students then decided they wanted to do something to help the dogs. Supporting the organizations we had contact with seemed like a good way to help so the classroom fundraising initiative became the Garage Sale. The planning, advertising, collecting, writing, organizing, scheduling, calculating, collaborating all took place culminating with the Garage Sale event on March 2.
Congratulations students of Room 16 for a job well done!
